First Day Of School Tablescape

September 4th, 2014

Do you remember your first day of school?  Somewhere back in my memory I can remember standing up to say the pledge of allegiance on my first day of school.  I was very proud of having memorized my pledge of allegiance. All of the children in my class were standing facing the flag with their hands over their hearts and as the teacher recited we would follow along  proudly repeating each line.  I still get goose bumps whenever I am at an event where we stand facing the flag to Pledge Allegiance to The United States Of America.

School days, School days,
Dear old golden rule days,
Readin' and ritin' and 'rithmetic,  Taught to the tune of a hickory stick.

Did you have a little wooden desk like this one?

Did the boys sit on one side of the room and the girls on the other?
I don't really remember bringing an apple to school for the teacher, do you?
I named the little girl at her desk Gloria because she reminds me of my friend Gloria at work.  The little boy is named Andy and I named the Tilda doll Miss McMann after my kindergarten teacher. I found the little boy and little girl each with their own desk and book at the Goodwill nearby my house.  I had been looking at them for a month or so when they were marked to half price.  They had been seven dollars each but I bought them both for seven dollars. The Tilda doll was 90 cents at the VOA.  She is very well made and was spotlessly clean when I bought her, she looked like a schoolmarm to me.

I can see the cream of wheat my mother used to make us filling one of the bowls, with a sliced apple in the side dish and a glass of orange juice for breakfast. The Casa Verde plate would be fine for the toast and maybe some scrambled eggs and a slice of country cured ham on the dinner plate would make for a hardy breakfast.

I don't remember fancy napkins or napkin rings at the breakfast table.

Orange juice glasses were likely to have been jelly containers designed to be a juice or milk glass when the jelly was finished.

I don't remember placemats or charger plates at the breakfast table either.

I thought this little Amish classroom scene was so cute.

I think every thing on the table was thrifted except for the flatware.  The flatware came from marks for $2.99 for four place settings. I did change out the flatware after the first round of pictures,  and I did switch the positions of the boy and girl on the table.  I also removed the ruler bookcase after the first pictures were taken.

When I saw the picture below at the thrift store it reminded me of the empty house after the kids left for the first day of school.  Everything tidied up and the toys waiting in anticipation of the children coming home from school to play with them once more.

  1. Candy, this is so cute! I love the china, all the accoutrements, but especially those cute school children.

To answer your question, we sat alphabetically, and the boys sat with the girls, not apart. In first grade we had large work tables that I actually like better than our desks, but I remember thinking how grown up the single desks were! ;-)

  2. Oh I love it all - the kids in the desks, the school scenes, the extra little things you always add to your table settings. I went to first grade in a one room school - there were two of us in first grade, me and the teacher's daughter. We sat at a round table with little chairs and once a week we got to wash the table - then we stood on paper towels on the table and "skated" it dry. The "big kids" got to have desks and I wanted one too.

The next two years I was home schooled in Alaska (we called it Correspondence School back then) so we sat at our little table in the kitchen to do our schooling.

The checks on the plates remind me of school dresses - and the colors of the dishes are perfect for your table. I love the apple napkin rings (WA is famous for apples, so lots of apple stuff going on here too) and the bright apple bowls.

A wonderful table setting, and once again I think it is my favorite. Thanks for sharing your hard work and cute items.

  5. Yes! Cream of Wheat - yuck! I didn't like it then, and I still don't. :-) Your table is fun, and your class room is fun with the desks and dolls. They look so real! Your theme is adorable, and your table elements remind us so much of school. :-)

  11. You are such a savvy stylist - treasure hunting, imagining, creating, all to present us with this absolutely beautiful and nostalgic back to school tablescape, and allowing us to reminisce about our first day of school. I remember milk and cookies and quiet time, when we'd lie down on our mats just after sipping our little cartons of 2% milk and munching on a cookie! Then, it would be time for music or art or a story...ah, what splendid and sweet times those were. Thanks so much for inspiring us to treasure our childhood with your charming treasures here today.

    Happy Tuesday!

  12. Candy, my package arrived, filled with wonderful tablescaping goodies. I love everything, and it was so much fun opening it. I felt like it was Christmas. I can't wait to use all of it in a tablescape. Thank you so much.
Your tablescape is really such a fun back-to-school table. I love the little, boy, girl, and teachers at the desk. I also really like that ruler bookshelf. What perfect accessories for a b-t-s table. You even have apple napkin rings for the occasion. I love all of this, and I love my prize! laurie

  13. I am so glad you are happy with your prizes Laurie, they are just in time to use for fall. The b-t-s table was fun to gather up all the accessories. I really enjoyed shopping for the little things.
