Over the Summer Fabby at Fabby's Living celebrated her third anniversary blogging you can see her beautiful Fourth of July Patriotic Tablescape anniversary post
here. Fabby was celebrating by giving away a set of lovely "straw shawl" hand made place mats. From the moment I saw them I knew I would love to have them. When I found out I had won them I was delighted! I knew exactly how I would use them too. I had been looking for a place mat to use with my Royal China Cavalier Ironstone china. The pattern name is Sussex and it is a lovely vintage pattern with a brown floral on a creamy background. This china needed a lacy delicate place mat that would show off the pattern. I adore the way this table setting came out.
I knew from the beginning that I wanted a warm chocolate brown tablecloth as the canvas to build this tablescape on. I searched for two months to no avail to find my perfect tablecloth. I gave up and bought a piece of brown material with a cream floral print but was not happy with it. So I decided to get out and look again yesterday morning. I started at the HomeGoods Store at nine thirty in the morning - nothing.... So then I went to Tuesday Morning, again nothing.... so I started at the thrift stores again, first the Goodwill.... nothing, then the Volunteers of America.... nothing, and finally I drove down to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army was crowded with bumper to bumper shoppers. I literally could not get through the store. Instead of going down to the domestics department as I usually do, I detoured through the furniture department and apologized to many people for threading around them to get to the domestics department by going along the outside wall. As I passed the infants bedding I spotted a piece of material hanging between the crib sheets. It was a four yard by 60 inches wide piece of decorator fabric with a slight raised pattern in the weave. And most important of all, it was a beautiful true chocolate brown. If I had gone to the domestic department as I usually do I would never have seen this fabric wedged between the crib sheets in infants bedding. My detour had taken me right to it.
The place mat.
Except for the pears I kept the the table to just brown and white for this first fall table. I love the warmth of the brown, it just looks so homey. I used the rooster tureen as my centerpiece and small brown birds as accents around the table. The napkin is a white sateen with a brown and white calico napkin folded underneath.
The pears are set in a bed of raffia in the berry bowls. The raffia complemented the natural fiber in the place mats.
Everything used on this table was thrifted except for the flatware and the pears. The flatware came from a Tuesday Morning sidewalk sale and the pears were bought at Marc's (my favorite closeout store).
Thrift on ladies, thrift on - you never know what you are going to find.
I will be sharing at:
Absolutely stunning - the tablecloth is perfect!!! That centerpiece is super! I love how the crystal pops with all that brown and white - and what a clever way to do the napkins. The pears are just that little touch of color that sets everything off.
ReplyDeleteDear Candy, you always do the most amazing tablescapes and this one is no exception... it-is-stunning and elegant!
ReplyDeleteI'm like you when I go out looking for something and can't find, I just simply make or have it made and the brown cloth looks great through the placemats. You just reminded me I need a brown cloth too.
The china is gorgeous, I love brown and white, hope I can find something like it sometime in the future. The pears are adorable, I thought they were real, lol!
Love the chicken centerpiece and the combined napkins...well, I love it all,
Thank you so much for the shout out. I'm blogging 3 years, because I never did anything until the following year, I just didn't have time and didn't know how to go about it...hehehe
Have a blessed week my friend.
FABBY
Just wrap all - AS IT IS - and deliver to my home ahahahah
ReplyDeleteDuring the weekend I started planning an Autumn Lunch with the in-laws and like it always happen mind flies from the dishes to the tablecloth... and I was thinking how I'd never done a brown toned and it's so sweet and warm for Autumn. Today I saw this and thought I wouldn't change a thing of the amazing setting you achieved. Loved every and each detail and item you used.
Love,
Teresa
I am going to have to enjoy fall vicariously through your tablescape. Love it! It is still hot here,
ReplyDeleteMy mother had some similar dishes, and I always loved them so! I like the way the weave of the placemats reflect the weave of the centerpiece's porcelain basket. That tureen is so cute. Love the hen!

I used to see this dish pattern rather frequently at the thrift stores but it seems to be less common lately. I am looking for the coffee cups to use for everyday at home.
DeleteWhat a beautifully elegant brown and white table, Candy. Between the table cloth and placemats those dishes really shine! The chicken tureen is the perfect centerpiece, too. The pears add just the right amount of color to a very classy table.
ReplyDeleteYou are so on...one never knows what they will find while thrifting. It has something to do with the hunt for the perfect pieces, too!
Have a great week.
I thought the placemats looked especially pretty with the brown background, it just looks like fall to me.
ReplyDeleteI can't find your email address.
DeleteThis is so pretty, Candy. That tablecloth was meant for this setting, and obviously, you were meant to find it. All of the textures on this table give it so much interest. Love the addition of the pears. laurie
ReplyDeleteBeautifully styled and photographed vintage tablescape, Candy, and perfect for the upcoming season. I have always loved pear green with brown and white, it's such a soothing colour combination and here the green is fresh and crisp against the backdrop of cozy browns. How pretty are the pears all nestled in their little nests! Fabby's lacy beige placemats are a lovely foundation for the autumn ambiance that floats throughout.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Thursday, my friend, and thanks for the first taste of fall!
Poppy

ReplyDeleteOh, Candy, you have outdone yourself with this tablescape! It is absolutely warm and welcoming and I so love your attention to every detail. I don't know what I like the best: the dishes (I want them for my fall hutch decorating!); your choice of linens (you're so right about the chocolate brown); your pop of color with the pears (love the raffia nests!): everything is perfect. Bravo for a job so well done. Thank you for sharing. Rosie @ The Magic Hutch
ReplyDeleteThank you Rosie. I was lucky to find the whole set of this dish pattern, there are dinner plates, luncheon plates, salad plates, B&B, soup bowls, & berry bowls. I keep them in my retro Hollywood Regency china hutch.
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty table.
ReplyDeleteI love the white with the autumn browns and the pop of green pears, Candy, it is so lovely! The tureen in the center looks fabulous! Very artistically designed!

What's that thing about taking "the road less traveled"? Look what it netted you: the perfect chocolate brown table covering!!! Wow...bumper to bumper shoppers at Salvation Army? That thrift store must have a lot of great stuff in it!
ReplyDeleteThis table is the perfect example of why we should shop thrift stores and garage sales and all those other shopping outlets that too many people turn their nose up at!!! What do I care if it was owned by someone else before me? That's like not wanting to move into a historic home! Crazy!!!
Congratulations on being featured on Susan's post! You deserve the accolades and recognition because this table is gorgeous AND affordable if you know how to shop!!!
I had some of these dishes in the 70's. They came from Kerr Drug and have Cavalier stamped on the back. Makes me think of when I had little ones running around.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!!! Be still, my heart!!! I LOVE brown transferware and you've set the perfect table with it!!!! I just love EVERYTHING about it. The green pears add a lovely touch!! GORGEOUS!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe table is beautiful. I am going to keep my eyes open for a set of brown and cream dishes like your whenever I am at a thrift store or flea market. I adore the fact that almost everything was thrifted. You are truly talented.

Congrats on winning those lovely placemats, Candy. They looks so pretty and look even prettier with your perfectly matched beautiful dishes. Everything on the table is beautiful including the napkins....Christine
ReplyDeleteHi Candy! Oh, your table looks gorgeous! I really do love your brown and white transferware. I have those same goblets and the chicken tureen! Thank you so much for popping in to see me and I hope you're doing well.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
