Here Comes Frosty

22 Days Til Christmas - Diary of a Christmas Countdown

Frosty the Snow Man - Thumpity-thump-thump

As a young mother back in 1969, I sat down baby in arms, and watched Frosty the Snowman on TV for the first time.  It was the first of many times that I watched that TV special with the first of many babies.  We listened to the voice of Jimmy Durante as the narrator telling the story of Frosty.  This TV special and the song Frosty The Snowman are dear to my heart at Christmas Time.
Every year the holiday season would start with the Frosty The Snowman or Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer holiday TV specials.  That night would also be the start of my holiday baking season.  At each commercial I would run back and forth to the kitchen and shuffle pans of cookies into and out of the oven.  The boys always knew how special Christmas was.  There was always a large live Christmas tree covered in the ornaments passed down from our families. The mantel would be decorated in red and white and a large homemade wreath would be hung on the front door.

Frosty the Snowman was written by Walter "Jack" Rollins and Steve Nelson and recorded by Gene Autry and The Cass County Boys about the time I was learning to talk back in 1950.  I grew up with Frosty and was thrilled to share this beloved song and the Frosty Special with each and every one of my boys.

Frosty The Snowman - my interpretation of my "holiday frosty" with partial lyrics

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
and two eyes made out of coal

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say
He was made of snow but the children
know how he came to life one day

There must have been some magic in that
old silk hat they found

For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around
I can hear hear Gene Autry singing Frosty the Snowman and remember snuggling up on the couch with the kids and the wonderful smells of hot cookies wafting in from the kitchen.

I can see Frosty going thumpity-thump over the hills of snow.

Frosty knew the sun was hot that day
He Said "Let's run and we'll have some fun"
He knew he was going to melt away

Our traditions help mold and keep our families together.  It bonds us to our neighbors and our communities.

This little song has delighted at least two generations of children.  Brightening holiday spirits and bringing laughter into our homes.

Frosty knew he was going to melt,  he had to hurry on his way, and yelled out "don't you cry" to the children, and that he would be back someday. If you think about it, it seems that someone is always hurrying into and out of our lives just to come back again someday.

For the observant out there, you may have noticed frosty is now sporting a new "rose" hat.

The snowman plates, cupcakes, wine glasses came from our local close out store Marc's.  Chargers from Walmart, flatware from the World Market. The large snowman and frosty pot were thrifted at Goodwill.

Have fun, take time to enjoy being with the kids.  They will remember.

  7. Candy,

All through your description of theFrosty/Rudolph Christmas specials, it was as if you were describing my OWN childhood in Toronto. I first remember being mesmerized by these holiday specials back in the early 70s, when I was a little girl (I'm 49), and my two siblings and I would sit for hours, powdery snow falling outside, my mom getting snacks ready for us to munch on and every year, and even though we had seen the specials a number of times, we'd sit in suspense until the very end, feeling jolly ourselves for our heroes good luck!

I also collect snowmen (and Santas), and your beautiful tablescape is charming and festive! What a happy holiday table! Thanks for sharing!

  13. So So So darling, Candy. I, too, had a new baby back in 1969 and watched that same special. Our TV was an old black and white one-so Frosty was grey and white to us! Your pieces are all so sweet. You have amassed a wonderful collection of snowmen! I love them-xo Diana

  14. Hello, Candy, what a beautifully written post, really brought back great memories of my childhood. My mom talks about how she used to give me an early bath and dinner and we'd snuggle up in the comfy chair and watch those shows, now classics, when I was a toddler. Your table is fantastic, great finds from Goodwill and great combos with the new things, too. Merry Christmas - Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com

  15. What a festive table setting!
But I was severely traumatized by Frosty the Snowman melting the first time I watched the movie. After that I stayed away from it or turned it off half way. Yes, I was a sensitive kid :)

  16. This is such a cute table, Candy! I love all your cheerful snowmen! The plates are all so pretty and colorful, and I love the whimsical goblets. You did a great job with your table; I think Frosty conjures up fun memories for all of us. I have to admit, when I was growing up, my favorites were "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Rudolph". :)

Visiting from Seasonal Sundays -- have a wonderful week!

  19. I have no idea how I missed this one - but I did. So I'm glad I came hunting for it. I adore all the snowman and snowflakey dishes - everything is fabulous. I think you should serve ice cream snowballs on these pretty dishes. Yummm
