Calico and hearts

The weather has been pretty wretched over the past couple of weeks around here and for most of the country.  Skies have been grey and snow has been abundant.  Color seemed like the only thing that would make life a bit more cheerful.  I happen to love roosters in the kitchen.  My collection of roosters has been residing on top of the kitchen cabinets since November when the Christmas decor started going up.  I thought I would take my favorite red calico roosters out of exile and use them in a Valentine tablescape.  This started over a week ago.  I have compiled a collage of pictures of the table set for breakfast, lunches and dinners over the last week or so.

The tablecloth was made from one of the panels of fabric that I bought last week at the Goodwill store near where I work.  There were four panels of black and white print with a black and white check pattern sewn onto the bottom.  The print portion is 68 inches and the checks are about twenty inches.  I took one panel and made sixty inch round tablecloth from the print and four napkin sheathes from the checks. In the following pictures you will see variations on the same table as it evolved over the last week or so.

The dinner plate is American Traditional made in Canonsburg,  Pa.  That I bought at The Volunteers of America store last month for ninety cents each.  The bullion bowls and saucers are Copeland Spode's Wicker Lane made in England bought from Goodwill.  The chargers were bought at Goodwill (two dollars for all four).

A week ago Sunday I made little gingerbread pancakes for my Husband and myself. so I could use the gingerbread men plates that I found at the Goodwill right before Christmas before I put them away until next Christmas. I liked the idea of Valentines and gingerbread men for a hearty cold day breakfast.
Yesterday I made chicken parmigiana from the recipe that I saw on Rachel Ray last week.  I thought a nice little Lady and the Tramp style pasta dinner would go beautifully with my heart shaped Valentine plates.
We also had a lovely lunch of chicken noodle soup (Campbell's) and fried bologna sandwiches last week on our Valentine table.
I found lots of spring plants to brighten up the kitchen at the grocery store and the Home depot.

I found an Irish lass at the Goodwill and placed her under a cloche on a lovely light green cake plate surrounded by small green plants that are for my fairy garden that I am working on.
My little girl cat Oreo has been keeping me company while I cook and play.
The snow is still out on the patio,  and skies are still grey.  But it is cheerful and cozy in my kitchen.
Breakfast anyone?
